Summer heat
It was hot and the summer was at its peak. They were all in the backyard, together. Back then they did everything together and things were way easier to understand. As a family they had problems but life was in the present and the future was still like a bright promise. A moment like that was an opportunity to rejoice. Laughter and smiles were all over the place, filling their hearts and giving them hope.
The afternoon was almost at the end and mom and kids were outside to play with water. Using buckets and a long garden hose they threw water at each other without even caring about getting wet. It felt like the only thing they cared about was having fun and playing. Happiness was revealed by the sun, making its way down from the skies to their faces.
“Oh my God, we should do this more often don’t you think?’’ -asked mom joyfully. The kids just shook their heads in harmony. They had never seen their mother that happy, especially over the past few months. Seeing herself smiling gave them a radiant feeling and that beyond any doubt was going to be a childhood memory they would cherish, they just didn’t know yet.
Mom sat down on the floor, with her back against the wall. The area was covered with a thin layer of water, which would reflect the trees and the plants they used to grow there. The oldest kid just stood and had a look at his mother. He couldn’t believe that the smile on her face was so light and caused only by a water fight. That moment was something to live for, life was worth living once more.
